Rookie question about a clue

From: (rebeccasigns@yahoo.com) | Date: 2015-03-08 12:48:36 UTC-07:00

Hi everyone,

My daughters and I are new to the hobby.  We're so excited.  We've just finished carving our "personal" stamps, we have journals, and we're ready to hunt!  We're going to find a few boxes and then plant our own once the snow melts here in Southeastern Michigan.  (Which will be soon!)

Since many of the boxes near us aren't snow-friendly, we're sticking with indoor boxes until the snow melts (again...which will be soon!)

This is a clue for an indoor box near us:

Silly question: I see no clues as to where to look for a box/stamp.  Should one assume here that we are to ask for the mother-in-law of Dale End Farm and that won't be against the "secrecy" etiquette?  I assumed that since secrecy and discretion is involved, it wouldn't be particularly acceptable to walk in the store and ask loudly, "Where's the letterboxing stamp?"  :-)

Thanks in advance for any replies!

This is an atypical box. I 'found' it several years ago. You do just ask for it. I would still be quiet about it, but it's not the kind where you are being totally discreet.

Yes, it sounds like you need to talk to the MIL.  Sounds like she enjoys the company!

In this case I would say that it is not against the secrecy etiquette to greet the person you see, ask if she is Diana's (Dale End Farm) mother in law and quietly ask for the letterbox.

You have already gotten good advice and I just want to commend you for asking the question.  Many newbies don't get the secretive nature of this hobby and can sometimes cause harm to boxes.  It appears you "get it" and I welcome you to letterboxing.  Have fun when your snow melts!

Thank you everyone!!!  The place of business is only open on certain days, we won't be able to hit them this week but we'll try next week.

We did find our first 4 boxes today and it was so, so, so fun!  My 9-year-old and 7-year-old girls absolutely loved carving their own stamps (as did I!)  When we were finding three of our first boxes in an indoor location, my 7-year-old was practically shaking with the possibility of being "found out" while we stamped.  It was so cute. "Quick!  Hurry!  Shhhh, let's get out of here before they see us!!!"

She has opened her logbook and stared at those stamps about 10 times since we got back.  We are hooked! We'll plant an indoor box in the next week at an absolutely awesome public location.

Thanks again, we really are enjoying ourselves!

Welcome to the wonderful hobby of letterboxing! Have fun finding the indoor boxes while this horrible MI weather abounds. I hope the thaw we are experiencing right now will last, and we can finally get out there and box. We have an active crew of boxers here in SE Michigan, so if you are ever interested, check out the events page on AQ for future events.

I just love stories like yours, especially about the kids. Great fun that gets everybody off their electronic devices and out in nature. I'm sure you'll have just as much or more fun finding boxes when the snow melts. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm!

After reading the clue, I'd just ask.  Sounds like she is in on the 'plot'.
